Spine Tinglers

Many years ago, when I was a homeschooling mom, I found myself reading bedtime stories to a little boy who had little interest in tales about apples on a farm, unless, of course, those apples were infested with zombie worms! Searching for horror stories written especially for children, I stumbled across the Goosebumps series by R. L. Stine.

One night, the power went out. In the Pacific Northwest power outages are long enough to burn beeswax candles until they are spent and sputtering, their light flickering then fading across the pages of whatever book we’ve curled up with. That evening, as a storm raged outside, we stayed up for hours reading A Night in Terror Tower, because what else is a mom supposed to read to two little brothers huddled in bed beside her during a storm? We were deliciously terrified.
It was love at first read, and Crawly’s first real venture into horror which became a lifelong journey that would eventually lead him from R.L. Stine and H. P. Lovecraft to Stephen King and William S. Burroughs.
Both Crawly and I have a deep affection for horror stories, which we believe to be one of the most imaginative and creative literary genres.
