January is a fresh start to a new year. But it’s also the middle or center of winter. Nature knows it. Animals are still burrowing in dens – gardens are still dormant in this coldest month of the year. If you live sandwiched between the ocean and a rainforest on the brink of vast wilderness like I do, you also know it is the time of year that wolves are most active in their howling. Wolf calls can be heard as far away as 10km, even though the hair stands up on the backs of your neck as though you could feel their breath. I crack open my frozen window at night so I can hear their communal howls to each other. January is mating season for our wolves and few sounds are as hauntingly beautiful as a wolf call. I guess that’s why the first Full Moon in January is known as the Wolf Moon.
